New Monero-Mining Botnet Targets Android Devices for Crypto-Mining

Over the weekend, a new botnet has been discovered and it’s been targeting Android devices by scanning for debug ports that are open so it can infiltrate victims’ devices with a malware that mines the Monero cryto-currency.

On Saturday, February 3, 2018, the botnet was first discovered and was targeting port 5555 which is the port used by the operating system’s native Android Debug Bridge or ADBL on devices that are running the Android OS. ADBL is a debugging interface that grants access to some of the most sensitive features of the operating system.

Android Malware Targets Uber’s App

Symantec researchers were able to discover an Android malware that sneakily spoofs Uber’s Android app and collects users’ passwords which allow hackers to take control of the affected users’ accounts. Even though this malware is not widespread yet, and most Uber users are not affected, this is not something to be taken lightly.

The Android malware pops up on the infected device’s screen on a regular basis and prompts the user to key in their Uber username and password. And once the user falls for the malware’s trick and enters their credentials, it will be collected by the attackers for malevolent purposes.

Target’s Sales Floors Are Switching From Apple To Android Devices

After three years of Apple products, Target is moving to Android devices for stocking, pulling items, and other essential sales floor duties. Target first outfitted its employees with Apple products in 2014, replacing PDAs with iPod Touches. Gizmodo reports: In Fall of 2016, Target stores began testing the Zebra TC51, which runs Android 6.0 Mashmallow and was confirmed to Gizmodo as “the new MyDevices for store team members chainwide” by a company spokesperson over email.
