Ever since companies like Xiaomi and Realme launched their phones in the budget phone market it almost felt like Samsung gave up on its budget line up but now in 2019, Samsung can actually be a tough competitor for Xiaomi and Realme in the budget smartphone segment. Samsung announced it’s a new phone in the M series line up, the Galaxy M40 and at first glance, the phone looks quite promising. The phone is priced at about $300 and Samsung’s main Aim for the Galaxy M40 is the Indian market. The phone is probably the first phone to house a punch-hole camera under such a price tag. Other than the screen and the punch hole camera that are highlights of this phone, the Galaxy M40 also runs on One UI and is powered by a Snapdragon 675 chipset. So, can this phone be a tough competition for other phones like the Realme 3 Pro or the Redmi Note 7 Pro? well, here’s our full review of the new Samsung Galaxy M40.
Design and Display
The galaxy M40 packs quite a premium design. In fact, the design of this phone is one of its biggest selling points in the market. Other than the Punch-hole camera in the front, most of the design aesthetics of the galaxy M40 are as same as other Samsung devices like the Galaxy A50 or other smartphones in the M series. On the right side of the phone are the volume rockers and the power button while the left side houses the Sim tray and other than that the left side is completely clean. On the top is the secondary microphone while on the bottom are the USB- Type C port, the main microphone, and the speaker grill and yes there is no headphone jack available on this phone. The back houses the triple camera setup, the fingerprint reader, and the Samsung logo. The back feels like glass but it is actually plastic and from what the word is going around in the market, Samsung is actually calling it “glastic”. Talking about the display, the front is all glass with an unspecified corning gorilla glass protection. The screen is 6.3 inches TFT panel with a resolution of about 1080 x 2340 pixels and a 19.5:9 aspect ratio. The Samsung Galaxy M40 also has a 91.3 % screen to body ratio which is quite good considering the phone’s price and also unlike the galaxy S10 line up which has the Punch-hole camera situated on the right of the screen, the Galaxy M40 has its camera located on the left of the screen.
Performance and Interface
Considering the price of the phone, the performance is actually quite fair and bearable. The Phone runs on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 675 chipset which is generally made for budget phones like this. The Snapdragon 675 can also be seen in some mid-range smartphones as well for instance the google pixel 3a and the Moto Z4. Even though the 675 chipset is a good chipset there is another phone available in the market that comes with a Snapdragon 710 chipset and surprisingly costs less than the Galaxy M40. The galaxy M40 can be bought either with a 4 GB of RAM or a 6 GB of RAM, there are some storage options available as well. As of now, you can purchase the Galaxy M40 with either 64 GB of internal storage or 128 GB of internal storage. No matter what storage option you choose you can always insert a MicroSD card up to 1 TB in this device although there is no dedicated MicroSD card slot available in the device meaning you can only use external storage when you give up one of your sims.
Camera and Battery Life
Other than the Punch-hole camera design another good thing about the Galaxy M40 is its triple camera setup. The primary camera on the Galaxy M40 is a 32 MP f/1.7 lens with PDAF while the secondary camera is an 8 MP f/2.2 ultrawide lens and last but not the least in the triple camera setup is the 5 MP f/2.2 depth sensor for portraits. The cameras on the Galaxy M40 are actually quite good considering its price. You can also shoot 4K videos up to 30 fps as well. The front camera isn’t behind either, it’s a 16 MP f/2.0 lens. Verdict
The Galaxy M40 is a total package, the phone comes with an awesome looking design, a good camera, and an average battery life. Choosing the Galaxy M40 as your daily driver is just up to because there are many other devices available in the market that can give out better performance like the Realme 3 pro or have a better screen like the Galaxy A50 but if you want a phone that has a punch-hole camera and costs under $300, galaxy M40 is your best bet.
