4 Things You Need To Know About Pure Sequence Formation in Rummy

Bet you can’t get enough of rummy. As one of the popular card games played the world over, its simple rules of arranging cards into sets and sequences make rummy ever interesting. According to the rummy rules, you’ll need to arrange the cards dealt with you into defined groups called sets and sequences.  In 13 card rummy, the objective of the game is to meld the 13 cards dealt into sets and sequences with at least one pure sequence and one impure sequence.

Pure sequence

When you arrange 3 or more consecutive cards from the same suit without using joker(s), then we have a pure sequence. For example, 3, 4, 5 and 6 of Hearts form a pure sequence.

Let’s dive into understanding 4 important things about pure sequence formation when playing rummy.

  1. Number of cards in a pure sequence

Generally, beginners are learning how to play rummy they tend to assume that pure sequence is 3 cards alone. However, a pure sequence can be either 3 or more cards too. But, the qualifying rule is, the cards have to be consecutive in their order.

According to rummy rules, even a 3, 4, and 5 of Hearts is a valid pure sequence as the 3, 4, 5 and 6 of Hearts.

  1. Jokers make no sense without pure sequence

In rummy, jokers are considered to be a boon. Regardless of whether it is a printed joker or a wild card joker, the more jokers you have the easier it becomes for you to meld your cards into sets and sequences. But, in situations where you are unable to meld the mandatory pure sequence, then the jokers at hand are futile. Hence, when you are learning on how to play rummy, focus all your efforts on learning to meld the pure sequence as quickly as possible.

  1. Opting for a drop when no hope of melding a pure sequence

At the start of the game when you are dealt with an extremely bad hand without any scope for melding the pure sequence, you may opt for an initial drop itself. As per rummy rules, this will fetch you lesser points. Again, after a round, if you are still unable to make any headway without the remotest chances of forming a pure sequence, you may decide for a middle drop. This will save you from being penalized heavily. Most of the successful players prefer to drop when they do not see a pure sequence happening.

  1. Points at the time of declare

When you are learning how to play rummy, if you are the first player to make a valid declaration, then your points will be zero. However, if you are one among the losing players who have melded the pure sequence before the declaration by the winner, then your points would be calculated based on the remaining cards that you have not melded. Hence, from point’s perspective too, it is always better to meld the pure sequence before anything else.

Conclusion

Rummy rules are simple, so are the priorities of the game too. Begin your focus with pure sequence and then with the rest of the melds.
