Sony Corporation this week announced the launch of Network Media Player “NSZ-GS7” and Blu-ray Disc Player “NSZ-GP9” powered by Google TV, starting with North America and Europe.

Having said that, I am quite sure that many of us do hope to see Cupertino roll out a new quad-core processor with the same naming convention as the A5 sometime down the road, and that day might arrive sooner than you think. Xbox 720 and PlayStation 4 to go head to head in June:
Sony and Microsoft are set to go head to head at the E3 games expo this June, with the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox 720 both purportedly to be given d?buts at the LA based show.
That's the low-down according to gaming site MCV, who claims to have confirmed the details with "third-party publishing sources" who state that Microsoft had "signalled to partners" that it was all set and Sony would "not be left behind this time".

Microsoft famously beat Sony to the 7th generation console punch back in the mid-noughties with the Xbox 360 getting a head start on the PS3. A start that led to a lead it has never let slip.

This isn't the first E3 launch murmurs for the two consoles either. Back in November an Edge report stated that Ubisoft Montreal (the development team behind Assassin's Creed Revelations) is "hard at work on target boxes?based on the intended specifications of Microsoft’s Xbox 360 successor" using PCs stacked with off-the-shelf components supplied by Microsoft itself with a view to an E3 showcase.

And, later that month Jim Ryan, PlayStation Europe's big cheese, said that it would be "undesirable" for the PS4 launch to lag too far behind the competition. Nintendo's Wii U is all set to hot shops this year, don't forget.

And if you think we're being presumptuous with our Xbox 720 moniker, you'll do well to remember that Microsoft itself has already revealed the name....sort of. Giving photo enthusiasts and professional photographers a new level of speed and performance, the new range of XQD memory cards by Sony supports the recently adopted XQD specification for high-speed, high-performance digital image capture. Using the new cards, XQD compatible high-end DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) users can capture up to approximately 100 frames in RAW format^*3 in continuous shooting mode. In addition to outstanding high-speed data transfer capability, the cards are highly reliable to protect users’ data and images.

XQD memory cards achieves stable continuous shooting of RAW images and blazing fast data transfer rates (up to 1Gbps; 125MB/s, write and read) through the PCIe^*4 interface. A unique controller and optimised flash memory enables high-speed data processing, resulting in faster write speed and performance that can’t be achieved by conventional compact flash cards.

Sony is also introducing a USB 2.0/3.0 compatible XQD card reader (model MRW-E80) so users can quickly and easily transfer large quantities of very high capacity data to their PC. Also, an XQD ExpressCard Adapter (QDA-EX1) will be available for use with computers with an ExpressCard™ 34 card slot.

While 3D printers can be used to create all sorts of objects, it would only be a matter of time before criminals started using it for malicious intent. And well, it looks like it has already begun. A sophisticated card skimmer that was believed to be created with a 3D printer was recently discovered and removed from a Chase Bank ATM in West Hills, California. The card skimmer fit perfectly over the ATM’s regular slot which meant that it was easy to install and hard to notice if you weren’t familiar with the ATM machines.

The skimmer was capable of collecting your card data and wirelessly transmitting it over to a waiting recipient. It even featured a pinhole camera which activated whenever a card was inserted and recorded users inputting their PIN into the machine. The people responsible for the skimmer haven’t been caught yet, but this goes to show that anyone with the knowhow and resources can easily create ATM skimmers like this in the future. As usual, if you ever notice something wrong with an ATM, don’t hesitate to inform the authorities.

RePro3D lets you touch 3D characters

If you’ve always fantasized about the idea of interacting with video game characters using your own hands instead of a video game controller, that idea is not so far away. At CEDEC 2011, a research group from Keio University presented RePro3D – a naked eye 3D display which viewers can touch a 3D character that’s floating in mid air. The RePro3D is made up of a mechanically-controlled model environment, a tactile interface and a glasses-free 3D integral imaging display.

Users look through a full-parallax 3D display system that uses “retro-reflective projection technology” to show stereoscopic 3D images without the use of special glasses. An infrared camera is used to detect the position of the user’s hand, which then lets the on-screen character react accordingly. A tactile device worn on the user’s hand gives the sensation of touching something physical.
The technology is far from perfect right now, as evident in the video, but it’ll eventually get there someday. Check out the demonstration video for yourself to see the RePro3D in action:

Windows 8 - features

It’s been nearly 2 years since the very successful arrival and uptake of Microsoft Windows 7. With the confident air of triumph in its lungs, the Redmond-based company has hit the world with details of its very next computer operating system under the codename, funnily enough, of Windows 8.

The question you’re asking yourself, moments before the more important “so, what is this going to cost me?”, is whether or not you should be looking forward to upgrading rather than just being inevitably forced into it over time. Although we can’t answer that part about how much money you’ll need to buy it, we can tell you what it’s all about.

At the same time, do be warned that, so far, Microsoft has only released the Developer Build, so do expect quite a few look and feel changes by the time it reaches a machine near you. That said, on with the show...

PC or tablet

You’d be forgiven for looking at the screenshots of Windows 8 and wondering whether it’s a PC or tablet OS that's in front of your eyes. The answer is both. Microsoft is trying to unify all the computing spaces within its ecosystem with this launch and, although not specified, it looks like that will stretch to its mobile phones and the Xbox too, but more on that later.
For the first time, Windows is set to be compatible with machines running ARM-architecture microprocessors as well as the more familiar x86-based ones. In other words, the sorts of things you find in tablets and phones made by Qualcomm, Nvidia and Samsung as well your laptop-style Intels and AMDs. Whether or not it becomes something that’s actually good to use on a tablet remains to be seen but Microsoft is certainly giving a decent shot with the Windows 8 and its Metro UI.

Lock Screen/Welcome Page

Before we get going with the workings of the interface and touchscreen though, the first thing that’ll greet you on Windows 8 is the revamped, remastered and re-engineered lock screen and welcome page. You can choose to gain access via a standard user name and password scenario or by having a PIN or, more interestingly with a picture lock. A picture lock consists of uploading an image of your choice which you then make three gestures upon when prompted. So, for example, you might use a photo of Steve Jobs and then draw two devil horns and tail on him and those three swipes would open up the OS to use.
Once past security, the welcome page is yours to use as you will and represents another step on in the evolution of what Microsoft has been introducing into this space since Windows XP. Now, not only do you get your avatar but also a choice of your own custom background, the time and date and a few direct links to apps such as e-mail or whatever it is you need immediate access to; in fact, you can pin whatever apps you like to the screen.

Metro UI

You’re going to hear a lot about Metro-this and Metro-that in the build up to launch, which is generally expected to be towards the end of 2012. Metro is the user-interface at the very front end of Windows 8, but is a style itself that’s actually been around in principal since the design of Microsoft Encarta 95. Metro began to develop in other products like Windows Media Center and in Zune software but most will recognise it from Windows Phone 7.
Now before you freak out and decide that you never want to upgrade, the Metro UI is just the top surface; you can choose to ignore it and head straight into the more traditional style Windows desktop like the one you find on the current version. For those who’re happy to give it a whirl, what Metro brings is a start screen UI populated by panels of tiles of either perfectly square of double the width rectangular size. Some these are said to be “live” and flow in an animated fashion with the content that lies within them, or they’re simply frozen images.

Touchscreen or mouse & keyboard

It should be of little surprise that Windows 8 is designed for touchscreens. Microsoft pushed the idea out with the launch of Windows 7 and, although perhaps the hardware market wasn’t ready for it at the time, it certainly is now given that this latest OS is aimed at the tablet PC space.

From the demos at the Build conference, where the software has been shown off at its fullest so far, it’s fairly clear that touch plays a far bigger role this time and seems more or less synonymous with the idea of the Metro UI. You can use a traditional mouse and keyboard approach - and you’d probably best stick to it once you head to the old school desktop interface - but touch has been far better thought out in this version than before.

Touch in the Metro UI allows you to pinch to zoom out and see your whole Start stream of tiles and panels in one go; you can also navigate to and from different sections as you might in the propeller view that comes on several of the Android phone UIs

Search

Search is a key area and, mercifully, not something that’s disappeared along with the Start Menu. Search is very much integrated into the Metro experience of Windows 8 and you can activate it from your keyboard by hitting the Start key. Search results come up for apps, files and for settings too and you can also search within apps; specifically including Internet Explorer will then, itself, begin to search using Bing.
Once you have your results, you can choose to share what you’ve found via a share charm.

Syncing

This is obviously going to be an area which we hear more and more about in the run up to launch and, indeed, as other Microsoft OS-based hardware steps in line. Even before we get an updated Xbox 360 dashboard to match though, there’s still plenty you can co-ordinate.

Apple has, over the years, patented a number of ideas that dealt at least on some level with 3D interfaces, but today's patent for a projected "image area" where 3D manipulation could be realized emanating out of future mobile devices -- if practical for the company to implement -- could have major implications for future gaming, interfaces and other user interactions, going beyond the movement-sensing technologies of devices like Microsoft's Kinect, reports Patently Apple.
As described in the patent, a device such as an iPhone could use a pico projector-like light-emitting diode to create an "imaging space" where movements would be detected by a scanning beam, camera or combination. Visual feedback would cue the user as to the relationship of the hands to virtual objects, for example "grabbing" a virtual knob and adjusting it with the appropriate hand movements.

Possible uses include a projected keyboard that would detect input based on hand movement, even providing audible feedback; Kinect-like gaming for the Apple TV or just general 3D navigation such as "virtual swiping."

While all the normal goodies were added (bug fixes and the like) this update now officially supports Honeycomb with the new large screen compatibility mode. The update also fixed some serious security holes in regards to the older version of the app storing cache files with permissions that were not restrictive enough. With USB3.0 capabilities, users can transfer data files from a PC to the external hard drive at up to 3x speed, using the drive's Data Transfer Accelerator feature. Using a USB 2.0 connection, users can transfer data at approximately 2x speed.

The Password Protection Manager software keeps users' data securely protected even when the drive is used as "portable hard drive" away from home. Other useful software includes: Backup Manager for easy, automatic backup; and FAT32 formatter software for re-formatting the drive from NTFS to FAT32.
