Apple hints at miniDP to HDMI adapter

Apple in its launch of the new MacBook Protoday put out hints that it will more officially support HDMI soon. The video options in its specs list show the option of HDMI output using an official "Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter" despite Apple having made no mention of such an adapter itself. A search of the online Apple store doesn't show any adapters of the kind, whether made by Apple or anyone else.
Third-party adapters have existed before, including those from KanexStarTech and TeleAdapt, but these have never had official recognition from Apple. The DisplayPort spec is technically compatible with HDMI but doesn't supply HDMI's usual audio without a secondary connection.

Any plans for an adapter may indirectly support rumors of a Mac mini with HDMI as it would show Apple taking a more active interest in TV output. Users to date have often run the Mac mini and MacBooks through their TVs as unofficial home theater PCs but have often had imperfect resolution support. HDMI is now a fairly common output option on Windows notebooks with sufficiently fast graphics hardware.

Apple releases new MacBook Pros with Intel Core i7, i5 processors

The 13-inch MacBook Pro features the new NVIDIA GeForce 320M graphics processor for up to 80 percent faster graphics and a groundbreaking 10-hour built-in battery, Apple said Tuesday. The new 15-inch and 17-inch MacBook Pro models feature Intel Core i5 and i7 processors and Apple's new automatic graphics switching technology that toggles seamlessly between powerful NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M and energy efficient Intel HD Graphics processors. All six new MacBook Pro configurations come with 4GB of RAM standard.

Microsoft launches its first own-brand devices today

Microsoft is to unveil its first Microsoft-branded phones today in a move aimed at strengthening its presence in the mobile phone market.
The two phones are part of Microsofts long awaited 'Project Pink' portfolio and are aimed at the teenage market.
The phones will not be powered by Windows 7 software and will be priced competitively against the Apple iPhone and Google Nexus One.
The Microsoft-branded phones will be made by Sharp and sold by Verizon Wireless in the States. The handsets are expected to be successors of the Sidekick, which was made by Danger, a handset manufacturer which was bought by Microsoft two years ago.
Analysts believe the new phones may be forerunners to a Microsoft-branded portfolio of smartphones.
This is a trial for Microsoft, Morningstar analyst Toan Tran told Reuters. If this goes well or better than they expect, they may be more willing to dip their toe in the water and build a full-fledged phone.

Meizu 's iPad clone to pack 1080p, 12-hour battery

Meizu CEO Jack Wong on Sunday posted some of the first details of his company's iPad clone, the mBook. The tablet will be slightly smaller than its Apple counterpart at 8.4 inches but should play 1080p and officially last longer on battery at 12 hours. He promised the same 1024x768 resolution and capacitive touch as the iPad but noted it would have an HDMI output to show HD video at full size.
The tablet should achieve many of its goals through a 1.5GHz processor (likely Snapdragon) and would have all the features of Apple's 3G iPads, such as 3G with some form of GPS as well as "high quality music playback." It's expected so far to run some form of Android, but heavily customized for the larger screen.

Nvidia: Tegra 2 smartphones coming in fourth quarter

An Nvidia executive on Wednesday said smartphones with the company's low-power Tegra 2 chips will become available in the fourth quarter this year.
The launch of phones will come under a year after the mobile chips were officially announced, said Mike Rayfield, general manager for the mobile business unit at Nvidia, during a speech at the company's financial analyst day in Santa Clara, California, which was webcast.
Rayfield did not reveal the names of phone makers adopting Tegra 2 chips. However, he said that more than 50 original design manufacturers and device makers are building products around the chips.
Nvidia first said that it was developing low-power Tegra 2 chips for smartphones in December. A company spokesman, Ken Brown, on Wednesday said the company hadn't published specifications of the Tegra 2 chips for smartphones yet. However, the chips would "bring the complete Web to the smartphone space" while offering long battery life, Brown said.
Earlier this year Nvidia officially announced dual-core Tegra 2 chips for mobile devices with between 5- and 15-inch screens, including low-cost laptops and tablets. Nvidia said the chips would be four times faster than their predecessors. The first Tegra 2 tablets will reach the market in the third quarter this year, Rayfield said.
Known as a graphics card vendor, Nvidia brings advanced graphics to mobile devices such as smartphones and low-cost laptops with the low-power Tegra chips. Tegra 2 chips put an Arm-based processor core, a GeForce graphics core and other components on a single chip.
Tegra 2 succeeds the original Tegra chips that power devices including Microsoft's Zune HD and Samsung's M1

AMD announces Turbo CORE for upcoming desktop CPUs

One of the ways to boost single-threaded performance on multicore machines is to shut down the cores that aren't in use and divert power to whichever cores are running the single-threaded workload. That's essentially what Intel's Turbo Boost does—it can dynamically "overclock" one or more individual cores, based on the needs of the system and the amount of power and thermal headroom available.
This "brute force" approach is actually the opposite of making use of multicore—it's about deliberately cutting back on the processor's core count, in some cases all the way down to one active core, in exchange for a single-threaded boost. In short, it amounts to a temporary, strategic retreat from the multicore era.
Now AMD has revealed new details of how it plans to endow its multicore processors with the same dynamic power optimization capabilities, but (at least initially) via a much cruder implementation.
The new feature in AMD's Phenom line of desktop processors is called Turbo CORE, and it will make its debut with the upcoming six-core Phenom II X6 ("Thuban") line. Today, AMD gave the first details of Turbo CORE, and they are pretty straightforward.

iPhone OS 4 unveiled, adds multitasking, shipping this summer

Just a bit more than a year after we first laid eyes on iPhone OS 3.0, Apple is back with the latest big revision of the OS that powers the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. iPhone OS 4 is shipping this summer (iPad in the fall), and the developer preview will be out today. iPhone 3GS and new-gen iPod touch will get all the features, but some features won't make it to the iPhone 3G, original iPhone, and older iPod touches. The biggest new feature is multitasking, which Apple says is going to be the "best" implementation in the smartphone space, though it's obviously not the first. App switching is activated by double tapping the home button, which pulls up a "dock" of currently running apps, and Apple claims it can do this without hurting battery life or performance for the front app. Unfortunately, this multitasking won't be available for devices older than the 3GS and new iPod touch. Multitasking is just one of seven different new "tentpole" features, including Game Center, enhanced Mail, and more...

Notable new features for users ("tentpoles" are in bold):

    • Multitasking.
    • Spell check (like on the iPad).
    • Bluetooth keyboard support (again, on the iPad).
    • User-defined wallpaper (a jailbreak favorite).
    • Tap to focus when recording video, just like with photos, and a 5x digital zoom for the camera.
    • Playlist creation and nested playlists.
    • App folders for sorting apps! You can even put an app folder in the dock.
    • Enhanced Mail! You can have a merged inbox view, switch between inboxes quickly, and sync to more than one Exchange account. There's also threaded messaging (at last!) and in-app attachment viewing.
    • iBooks, just like on iPad, only smaller. You can wirelessly sync books between platforms, a la Kindle.
    • Enterprise features, including remote device management and wireless app distribution.
    • Game Center. It's like Xbox Live, but for iPhone games. Includes achievements, leaderboards, and match making. It will be available as a "developer preview," and out for consumers later this year.

Developers are getting plenty of new tricks too:
    • New SDK, available today.
    • 1,500 new APIs.
    • Background audio (think Pandora).
    • Background VoIP (think Skype).
    • Background location data, both with live GPS for backgrounded turn-by-turn, and cell tower-based for lower power draw.
    • Local notifications. Like push notifications, but sends a notification straight from the app without needing a push notification server, perfect for an alarm, for instance.
    • Fast app switching. Saves the state of an app and resumes it from where you left off, without dwelling in memory.
    • iAd. Apple says it's for keeping "free apps free." The ads keep you in the app, while also taking over the screen and adding interactivity -- using HTML 5 for video -- up to simple gaming in-ad. Apple will offer a 60 / 40 split on revenue, and users can even buy apps straight from an ad.
    • In-app SMS.
    • Map overlays.
    • Quick look for previewing documents.
    • Photo Library access.
    • Calendar access.
    • Full access to the camera.
    • Video playback and capture.
    • Date and address "data detectors."
    • Automated testing and performance / power analysis (the same tools Apple uses).

    Apple plans 5- to 7-inch $400 iPad for early 2011 - report

Apple could be planning a smaller, cheaper version of its iPad tablet device with a screen size of 5-inches to 7-inches, and a price under $400, for launch in the first quarter of 2011, according to a new report.

Citing its senior analyst, Mingchi Kuo, DigiTimes reported Thursday that Apple is "expected" to release the new device in early 2011. Kuo cited "talks with upstream component sources," who said the device will focus mostly on reading and other mobile tasks that do not have a "high demand" for text input.

The analyst also said he believes the forthcoming HP Slate will not have an impact on sales of Apple's iPad, largely due to its Intel processor which consumes more power than Apple's custom-built A4. With virtually no competition in the tablet space, Apple managed to sell 300,000 iPads on its first day of availability.

The first-generation iPad has a 9.7-inch LCD, LED backlit screen with IPS technology. The existing iPhone and iPod touch have screen sizes of 3.5 inches.

Thats sound to me very good news, hope to be true !!
