Xbox 360 System Update Adds USB Storage, Gotchas

Xbox 360 SanDisk USB
Microsoft may be late adding USB storage support to the Xbox 360--Sony's PlayStation 3 supported it off the block--but it's finally live, for all you aspiring archivists. All you need to do is log into Xbox LIVE, pull down the latest update, and presto, you can dump data from your 360 to any external drive or memory key.
Well, almost any. Microsoft's list of "gotchas" turns out to range from annoying to deflating, once you've read the fine print.
Your storage device has to exceed 1GB to be recognized, for starters. That's a shame, since the best reason to pair an external storage device with the 360 is probably to manage game saves and miscellaneous dashboard bling, which aggregate well under 1GB. All those antiquated 64, 128, 256, and 512MB memory keys piling in cable boxes and desk drawers? Keep 'em in mothballs, because they're dead to the Xbox 360.
You're also limited to a maximum of 16GB per storage device. I'm not sure why 16GB, but I have my theories. Like: Microsoft doesn't want you getting better than they're planning to give by way of third-party peripheral sweetheart deals.
It just so happens Microsoft's partnered with SanDisk to sell official 8GB and 16GB USB sticks, priced at $40 and $70 respectively. That, you hardly need me to tell you, is criminally expensive, compared with the average price for analogous parts.

PS3 goes portable (kind of) with Hori’s LCD screen dock

This is something gadget modder Ben Heck might have thought about, but if yes, Japanese game peripheral maker HORI (which also sells stuff in the US) was faster this time. The company today announced [JP] a portable LCD screen, which, once attached to the top of a PS3 Slim, makes the console (somewhat) portable.
The HP3-87 will be marketed by HORI as a PS3 Slim docking station. It allows users to play games on the go (again: kind of), with images in 720p quality on an 11.6-inch screen with 1,366×768 resolution, 200cd/m2 brightness, 500:1 contrast ratio and 7ms response time. The device is also compatibe with torne, Sony’s Japan-only DVR/TV tuner for PS3.

  • Android to Get SkyFire Browser Soon

Android smartphone users are blessed with great browsers - starting from the fairly efficient default one to the likes of the Opera Mini and the upcoming Firefox Mobile, almost all the browsers for the platform do a great job at presenting the websites "as is". Having said that, there is a new entrant in the Android browser space - Skyfire. Certainly, having more options for a browser is not a bad idea.

Skyfire, who already has Windows Mobile and Symbian versions of its browsers, has now set its eyes on the Android space. It has announced that a version of Skyfire for Android based devices is in the making. In fact, they have already developed an alpha version of the same and are inviting alpha testers to use the browser and report bugs and issues. If you are interested, all you need to do is to get hold of a phone running Android 1.5 or above. Then provide folks over at Skyfire your device's IMEI number. You might want to go through the Skyfore Blog for more on this.

Unlike other browsers available on Android, Skyfire is capable of displaying Flash 10 content and supports Ajax, Javascript and Silverlight 2 as well. It is touted to be the only mobile browser to bring the full PC Web to phones. There is no word as to when the final version of this browser would arrive. This might take a few months because we are yet to see even a Beta version of the same.

Apple A4 chip up to 60% faster than Snapdragon

The A4 processor in the iPad is far faster than the Qualcomm Snapdragon processor running the Nexus One, according to early benchmarks. Although both run at 1GHz, Apple's chip is usually at least 9 percent faster loading most websites; it's up to 60 percent faster with very visually intensive websites. The AnandTech tests noted some unusual spikes, but even discarding these is an average of 10 percent faster.
It's unclear how much of the performance difference comes from software, as the iPad and Nexus One use different web browsers and different JavaScript engines. However, both use modern WebKit engines. The tests also show it being much faster than the iPhone 3GS, which is much more likely to be directly comparable; in most cases, pages loaded in just over half the time on the tablet.

The design is believed to still be based on the ARM Cortex-A8 architecture and has the chief advantages of a larger enclosure and battery that let it run at the higher speeds. However, it's not known how much if at all Apple will need to scale down the clock speed to accommodate it in the next iPhone, as no one has checked the power consumption of the A4 independently of its other components.

Apple will face stiffer competition after a 1.3GHz Snapdragon appears, but it's unlikely to ship in finished phones until late this year.

New mobile phone virus, called "MMS Bomber" in China

Recently a new mobile phone virus, called "MMS Bomber" has a strong appearance in China, affecting millions of devices in the country, according to Beijing Business News. The National Team Rapid Response Technical Aspects of Computer Networks in China (National Computer Network Emergency Response Technical Team / Coordination Center) has warned mobile phone users that the virus targets the smartphone of Nokia and Samsung running S60 3rd edition.
The virus is disguised as an application of the devices. Once installed, it automatically connects to the internet and send MMS containing harmful URL, to randomly generated mobile numbers without being aware of the holder of the device, resulting in economic detriment.
The virus protoanichnefthike in February by the Center for Security of Mobile Telephony NetQin Mobile, a company that provides protection for mobile platforms. The company's statistics show that at least 100,000 machines infected so far.
It is noteworthy that the virus integrates defense mechanisms. Once you reach the contamination smartphone, turn off the device management system, removing the users to uninstall the virus, according to the statements of Dr. Zoy Shihong, chief scientist NetQin.

Geminoid F: Hiroshi Ishiguro Unveils New Smiling Female Android

Japanese roboticist Hiroshi Ishiguro unveiled today his latest creation: a female android called Geminoid F. The new robot, a copy of a woman in her 20s with long dark hair, can laugh, smile, and exhibit other facial expressions more naturally than Ishiguro's previous androids.
Ishiguro, a professor at Osaka University, is famous for creating a robot replica of himself, the Geminoid HI-1, a teleoperated android that he controls remotely. The new Geminoid F ("F" stands for female) is also designed to be remote controlled by an operator.
In a press conference in Osaka, Ishiguro demonstrated how the android could mimic the facial expressions of the woman as she sat in front of a computer with cameras and face-tracking software.
    Here's some NHK footage:

Ishiguro built the android as part of his work at Osaka University and ATR Intelligent Robotics and Communication Laboratories, with collaboration from Kokoro Co., a Japanese firm that specializes in animatronics and ultrarealistic androids.
In designing Geminoid F, Ishiguro's team and Kokoro engineers wanted to create an android that could exhibit a wide range of natural expressions without requiring as many actuators as other androids they'd developed. In particular, they wanted the robot to sport a convincing smile -- not just any smile but, as the press release puts it, a "toothy smile."
Whereas the Geminoid HI-1 has some 50 actuators, the new Geminoid F has just 12. What's more, the HI-1 robot requires a large external box filled with compressors and valves. With Geminoid F, the researchers embedded air servo valves and an air servo control system into its body, so the android requires only a small external compressor.
The new design helped reduce the android's cost. According to this AFP report, Kokoro will sell copies of Geminoid F for about 10 million yen (US $110,000). Ishiguro and his collaborators plan to test the android in hospitals and also show it off at science museums and other venues.
More details from the AFP report:
The robot smiled and furrowed its brow in almost simultaneous mimicry of the woman, whose face was filmed with a video camera which then provided information on her expressions to the robot through electric signals.
"I felt like I had a twin sister," the woman told reporters afterwards.
The developers said they expected the robot to be eventually used in real-life situations, for example in hospitals.
"We've already got some data showing that the robot gave patients psychological security by nodding and smiling at them, when patients were checked on by doctors," said Satoko Inoue, spokeswoman for Kokoro, one of the two companies involved in the development.
Ishiguro's previous androids, in addition to his own copy, include replicas of his then four-year-old daughter and of a Japanese TV newscaster. I couldn't find more details about the identity of the Geminoid F's master template, only that she is "one-quarter non-Japanese."

Sharp to Launch 3D Displays for Mobile Devices

Sharp said it plans to start making advanced three-dimensional displays for cell phones and mobile devices that don't require special glasses, betting that demand for 3D images will grow beyond movie theaters to handsets.

"In the 2D era, contents and infrastructure have spread from movies to homes, and from homes to mobile devices," said Yoshisuke Hasegawa, Sharp's executive managing officer. "We believe the same thing will happen with 3D."

The Japanese electronics company held a demonstration showing 3D animation on the 3.4-inch touch screen that switched from one 3D photo to another.

The special displays don't require special glasses because the screens are designed to shoot different images to each eye.

The technology is likely to appear in Nintendo's next DSi portable game console, which the Japanese game maker said will play 3D games without using special glasses.

Mobile devices that use 3D imaging have been around for some time. Sharp had previously produced 3D displays in 2003, but the products failed to catch on, largely because of poor picture brightness and resolution. This time, however, the company has made breakthroughs for displays that are twice as bright and higher in resolution than existing 3D screens.

iPad jailbroken in a single day

iPhone Dev-Team member MuscleNerd revealed this afternoon that he has already managed to jailbreak the iPad after just a day of sales. The crack is a variation on the same "Spirit" jailbreak recently used to de-restrict iPhone 3.1.3 and, like the earlier technique, is believed to use a browser-based exploit as part of a trick to get root access and let unsigned apps run on the tablet. It's not yet evident how easily this could be made into an automated process for regular users.
A jailbreak was virtually expected following the iPad's launch, but the rapid discovery has shown that the iPhone 3.2 firmware used on the device hasn't patched all of the security holes that were present in the 3.1.3 code. Most jailbreaks to date have used vulnerabilities either in Safari or the OS itself to grant unrestricted access. The combination of the risk to users and Apple's own general discouragement of jailbreaking has led to many of these jailbreaks being rendered inert over time with firmware updates.

Google optimizes Gmail for iPad, tablets

Google joined in the slew of iPad news today by adding its own customized web interface for Gmail. The new version is an extension of the Android and iPhone viewers and takes a cue from the iPad's own mail suite. The normal message list remains on the left, but messages and whole conversations now appear on the right. Other buttons that would have normally needed an overlay can now stay on the screen.
The UI won't be exclusive to the iPad and should be available for any tablet with an HTML5-capable browser in the future. Google added that it won't necessarily have a tablet-optimized version of every page as certain sites should work better with the original, desktop pages.

On top of the web changes, Google said it would adapt Google Mobile App for the iPad and is investigating "new ideas" to improve its features beyond the iPhone edition.

One Step Closer to Minority Report: The Wireless Glove Mouse [VIDEO]

In the film Minority Report, Tom Cruise utilizes amazing technologies from the year 2054, including talking billboards, jetpacks, and most famously, augmented reality gloves that allowed him to interact with a computer interface without ever touching it. Needless to say, this very popular movie has spawned tons of technological inspiration.
Two students from MIT, Tony Hyun Kim and Nevada Sanchez, decided to go a step further, and the results are awesome to behold. For a class project last year, the two developed mouse gloves. By utilizing equipment that costs less than $100, they were able to create an interface where they could navigate, zoom, and manipulate a map, all by simply waving their hands through the air. Now they’ve made the gloves wireless, which you can see in action in the video below.
Of course the technology’s a little more complicated than that, but you get the idea. And while this is nowhere near Tom Cruise’s masterful manipulation of glove-based interfaces, it does make us believe that the technology of Minority Report is not that far away.
Here’s a video of the glove mouse in action, along with the famous scene from Minority Report that inspired it:

Cylindrus USB hub magic hat by Art Lebedev Studio

It’s a magic tophat! And this magic… it is engineering science. What one hat here does is the work of a much more scientific looking USB hub! But I say to you this! How fun is that box you’ve got, that silly looking, non-fun USB hub you’ve got over there? None at all! That’s not fun at all. What were you thinking! Instead you could be over here having the time of your life using this magic hat! It’s called “Cylindrus” and it contains no rabbits.
It does however contain magic. Magically connecting 8 USB cords of your choice, all fit neatly into this fabulous looking hat. The only thing not-magic about this project is the amount of people it took to bring it to fruition! That, my friends, instead, is part of the design process. A very non-magic time.
    USB spells for everyone!

      7-inch Android-powered iPad Clone Surfaces

      7-inch Android-powered iPad Clone Surfaces

It looks like our prediction of the coming of iPad clones was correct, and now a 7-inch iPad clone has surfaced, and is powered by Google’s Android OS. This 7-inch tablet seems to differ quite a bit from the 10-inch one we checked out yesterday, most noticeably it doesn’t seem to make any attempt to copy Apple’s iconic interface. It seems that this iPad clone will sport an 800 x 480 pixel touchscreen display, and is powered by an ARM SoC (system on chip) from Rockchip. From the picture, it seems that this device will offer two miniUSB connectors, an SD card reader, audio jack and what looks like an infrared receiver. Would you buy such a tablet instead of Apple’s iPad?

Solar Impulse HB-SIA - Solar Impulse HB-SIA airplane runs on solar power

Solar Impulse HB-SIA airplane runs on solar power

Solar Impulse has started taking its HB-SIA airplane which uses photovoltaic (PV) cells to keep it going for spins to make sure that everything works fine and dandy, fleshing out what used to be theoretical. Part of the "Solar Impulse Project," the HB-SIA measures 21.85m in length, 63.4m in wing length and 6.4m in height. The main wing and horizontal tail holds 11,628 pieces of SunPower Corp's photovoltaic (PV) cells which will power the quartet of electrically-driven engines that are able to churn out a maximum output of 7.5kW (10hp) and an average output of 6kW. This won't break any speed records though, with an average flight speed of 70km/h.
