Windows Phone 7 Details Emerge From The Depths

With the Mobile World Congress event making its way around the corner, we can all be for certain that it is inevitable for Windows Phone 7 to make its long awaited debut. That being said, there have been rumours floating about on what Windows Phone 7 might actually be? For months, almost a year we have seen images being leaked all over the interwebs and although we can all admit we were quite excited, the chances of it looking so or even being real for that matter were highly unlikely. Wait no more! PPCGeeks has some truly amazing information on what the Windows Phone 7 platform will deliver to our beloved handheld devices. All information detailed within may not be entirely official, although it is definitely the closest information we have heard on actually being real. Without wasting anymore time, lets jump into the nitty gritty.
-At the Mobile World Congress event on February 15th, 2010, Windows Phone 7 will be unveilved, although at this time plans are only to unveil the user interface of the new platform . Specific indepth functionality of the device will most likely not be shown.

-The User Interface is based upon codename “METRO”. It will be very similar to the Zune HD User Interface with a complete revamp of the “Start” screen. The UI is “Very Clean”, “Soulful” and “Alive”
-Unfortunately there will be no Flash support at the get go as there was not enough time to implement these features.
-Windows Phone 7 will only support application installation through service based delivery. (i.e Marketplace). Application installation via storage card will not be possible.
- No Multi-Task support. Applications will “Pause” when in the background, however will support notifications via push notifications.
-Marketplace will now support “try before you buy” as well as an API
-No NETCF backwards compatibility. This means the original rumor of no backward compatibility for applications holds to be true. That being said, there are high hopes of porting the NetCF to the newer platform easily.
-Microsoft is confident that devices will be ready by September 2010
-Full Zune Integration
-Windows Mobile Device Center will no longer be used. Zune software to take over syncing via PC.
-OEM Interfaces will not be allowed to run on the device. Say goodbye to Sense UI / SPB Mobile Shell / Point UI / Infinity, etc, etc
-Full XBOX Gaming Integration (Gamer tag, achievements, friends, avatars, merchandising, etc)
-Full support for social networking

Seagate BlackArmor external hard drive: USB 3.0 really makes a difference

This external hard drive looks very much the same as the USB 2.0 version we reviewed last year: it's slim, well-designed, and very portable. The only difference, and also the most significant one, is the fact that it now uses the USB 3.0 connection, instead of USB 2.0.

USB 3.0 has a top speed of up to 5GBps, and Seagate accommodates this by equipping the BlackArmor PS110 USB 3.0 with an internal SATA II 2.5-inch hard drive that spins at 7,200rpm (as opposed to 5,400rpm in the USB 2.0 version). The result? In CNET Labs' testing, the new drive is by far the fastest USB external hard drive to date, consistently trumping even the fastest USB 2.0 external hard drive by at least twice the speed.

This is the first USB 3.0-based external hard drive I've reviewed, so there's no real way to determine how fast the BlackArmor PS110 USB 3.0 is compared with other USB 3.0 external hard drives.

Symbian Powered Tablet In The Future?

With Google’s Android OS gaining more and more momentum on the mobile scene, it looks like it’s going to be an important player in the tablet battles of 2010. But aside from Apple’s iPhone OS and Windows 7, we might well see Symbian making some inroads into the tablet scene too. In a recent interview, Chief Executive of the Symbian Foundation, Lee Williams, said that there has been occasional interest for Symbian to be used on a tablet device, and it’s likely that in the next year or two, we might be seeing such a product hit the market place. It’s certainly an interesting idea, since we’re generally used to seeing Symbian on mobile phones. Would you want to try a Symbian-powered tablet, or do would you rather stick with Google’s Android, Apple’s iPhone OS or Windows 7?

MacBook Air clone from China

Where else but China can you get clones of all sorts of devices? The latest to fall victim would be the MacBook Air, as this clone comes in an exact duplicate packaging, alongside a manual and relevant drivers to get you started. Well, opening it up will be rather disappointing as it isn't exactly a computing powerhouse with an Intel Atom processor that is more relevant for netbook computing tasks. We wonder how long will it take before Apple's lawyers start giving the company making these calls. One advantage of this that we can't deny would be a user replaceable battery. Would you fork out $278 for one of these? We would like to caution folks who see too-good-to-be-true prices on auction sites like eBay that sell a MacBook Air at dirt cheap prices, complete with box and all considering this is a pretty close clone of Cupertino's.
