Apple today began large-scale testing of its next maintenance and security update for Snow Leopard, Mac OS X 10.6.3. The update originally entered limited testing in early December. In total the present build incorporates 221 code corrections to 92 system components, including Mail, MobileMe, iCal and QuickTime X.
The build is labeled 10D522, and approximately 665.7MB in size. Some specific improvements include better automatic spelling correction, and fixes for crashes that can occur while printing or using components like AppKit, iCal, Mail, and Photo Booth.
Apple has already noted four known issues with 10D522, involving iTunes freezes, and problems with updating applications, viewing Display preferences or navigating the ColorSync Utility Filters tab.

Google's Nexus One is official
We know, you're so surprised. Google's finally confirmed the Nexus One. We've naturally heard all about the phone already from dubious sources, and even reviewed the purported device, but now that they've got one in hand up on a stage, we suppose we'll have to set aside all of our doubts. So, the nitty gritty: 3.7-inch AMOLED display, 1GHz Snapdragon processor, compass, GPS, accelerometer, light and proximity sensor, 5 megapixel camera with LED flash, 3.5mm headphone jack, and a multicolored LED under the trackball. There are also two mics onboard, one on the bottom and one on the back, for the purpose of noise cancellation à la Motorola's CrystalTalk, and the phone is naturally running the brand new Android 2.1. The phone is actually HTC branded, unlike the pre-release versions we've seen, and can be custom engraved with two lines of text at the time of order, for that extra personal touch (there's a picture of the phone's back after the break). The phone is available today off contract with a T-Mobile compatible radio for $529 unlocked, shipping to the US, UK, Singapore and Hong Kong, or with a two year T-Mobile US contract for $179 (both with free overnight shipping in the US). Most surprisingly, the phone is also headed to Verizon this Spring, and Vodafone will score the device eventually as well.

Samsung debuts "wellness", transparent AMOLED players
Samsung on Tuesday unveiled two MP3 players designed with a transparent touch AMOLED display and customized "wellness" applications. The new IceTouch (YP-H1) features the world’s first 2-inch, full color, transparent Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode (AMOLED) touch-screen display; it includes functions for DVD-quality video and studio-quality audio playback, photo browsing, FM FM radio, and portable storage, while the MyFit (YP-W1, pictured) features the what the company calls "wellness-promoting technology" that claims to help users monitor stress level, fat thickness, calorie intake and burn, and exercise effectiveness. Both players will be on display at CES (Samsung booth #11026).
In addition to the full-color transparent AMOLED touch screen, the IceTouch features a high-performance CPU and Samsung’s own “TouchWiz Sweep” interface, which is designed to provide a comfortable grip and give users "new options" for interacting with their player, although the company provided few details. The device also brings new 5.1-channel sound enhancement technology and broad support for codecs (MP3, WMA, OGG, FLAC, AAC, M4A, WAV and MP3HD) along with video playback (MPEG4, WMV, H.264, Xvid and Divx) files. According to the company, the player also continually analyzes and adjusts audio levels to reflect the producer’s intended sound.
Samsung says the AMOLED screen casing is constructed using a dual-injection molding process and tempered glass that results in a smooth, durable and scratch-proof surface. The IceTouch ships in white, but can also be individually customized through separately sold color skins in pink, blue, purple and gray; it will be available in the first half of 2010 in both 8GB and 16GB capacities (pricing not announced).
The MyFit offers wellness management tools, such as stress and body fat levels and customized workout guides. The device features what it claims are the world’s first fat and stress sensors located on the top of the player are used by an embedded exercise management program to keep people on target with their fitness goals. A built-in accelerometer automatically tracks calories burned while jogging and users can record their caloric consumption per meal with the included food calorie database. Other wellness applications built into the MyFit include a water intake manager and smoking cessation utility.
The portable music player also offers an FM radio tuner and Samsung’s DNSe 3.0 sound enhancement technology, which it says helps to overcome the inefficiencies and limitations of compressed audio files to generate a more realistic stereo sound. Media playback includes high quality compressed and lossless audio formats, such as MP3, WMA, OGG, and AAC, as well as MPEG4 and WMV video formats.
The 16GB IceTouch and 8GB MyFit will be available in the first half of 2010, although pricing was not announced.

Nokia Image Exchange Update 05/01/2010
Update 05/01/2010
Nokia Image Exchange is an exciting, experimental image gallery to make browsing and sharing images fun and easy. It aims to provide a seamless integration of a mobile image gallery application and a corresponding web-service. Image Exchange explores user experience when the mobile phone is enabled with an always-on data connection and utilizes existing contact information as a basis for social networking.
A few notable highlights include: automatic account creation, automatic back up and synchronization of image data, instant sharing, notifications about new images from contacts and a web interface for uploading and downloading images.
Note: The first time you use Image Exchange it may be initially slow as it generates image thumbnails and uploads images onto your private web account. If available, you can use a WiFI network and charger during this period. After initial upload the application should be quite fast.

Intel's dual-core i3, i5, i7 chips official, tested
Two models beneath it, the 2GHz i7-620LM and 2.13GHz i7-640LM, are intended for extra-thin but fast designs like the MacBook Air and consume a lower 25W of power between the graphics and main CPU. They ramp up to 2.8GHz and 2.93GHz respectively and otherwise carry the same features as the 35W processor. Ultra-low voltage equivalents, the 1.06GHz i7-620UM and 1.2GHz i7-640UM, scale up to 2.13GHz and 2.26GHz, consume 18W of energy and are limited to 800MHz DDR3 memory.
Most of the notebook range centers on Core i5 models that range between 2.26GHz (i5-430M) and 2.53GHz (i5-540M) and boost between 2.53GHz and 3.06GHz. Most use 35W of power and are primarily limited by a smaller 3MB of L2 cache. A lone ULV model known as the i5-520UM clocks at 1.06GHz and scales up to 1.86GHz. At the low end, Intel's mobile Core i3 chips disable Turbo Boost and run at 2.13GHz (i3-330M) and 2.26GHz (i3-350M) without changing power or memory use.
At the desktop, just five processors are shipping and include four Core i5 dual-core processors between 3.2GHz (i5-650) and 3.46GHz (i5-670) with scaling from 3.46GHz to 3.73GHz and 4MB of cache. Core i3 involves just the 2.93GHz i3-530 and 3.06GHz i3-540, and these like their mobile equivalents disable Turbo Boost.
Tests of both show significant gains. A benchmark at Anandtech shows that, at the same 2.53GHz clock speed, a mobile Core i5 outpaces a Core 2 Duo between 7 percent and a large 46 percent in processor-intensive tasks. Integrated graphics in particular are now much faster and, in World of Warcraft, jump as much as 129 percent versus the aging GMA 4500, albeit at low resolution and detail. NVIDIA's GeForce 9400M isn't included but has historically run at higher resolution and detail.
Desktop tests are more mixed, and at PC Perspective it's determined that the 3.33GHz Core i5's only clear, uniform improvements are over the 3.16GHz Core 2 Duo. It only sometimes outperforms lower-end Core 2 Quad processors and usually trails behind the quad-core i5 and i7 hardware, suggesting that a greater number of apps now benefit from the extra cores. Integrated graphics also lag significantly behind even low-to-mid range dedicated hardware.
Systems based on both the desktop and notebook processors should be available within the next several days.

Popbox video streamer, everyone for $130.00

Hello, beautiful. We knew Syabas had a new 1080p video streamer in the works, but not one that looks this fine. The Popbox seems to be a more consumer-friendly and non-nerdy Popcorn Hour with a totally reworked UI. Plus, it’s a whole lot less at only $130.

The new interface supports Java, Flash, and Quicktime games and so-called Popapps that can do everything from displaying Twitter feeds to local weather when a user pauses a video. This greater support allows the box to hook-up and stream content from various Internet sites and fully utilize API’s like Netflix. Of course the box retains the vast video codex and container support that made the Popcorn Hour legendary.
The hardware itself is just your standard equipment beefed up a bit for 1080p@100Mbps support. Video is outputted via either HDMI or component video, while RCA analog and SPDIF handle the audio. Two USB ports and an SD card slot provides local storage support and an Ethernet port gives it network access.
The device should be out in March with an MSRP of $129. Hopefully Syabas has plans and partnerships in place to get this device in the mainstream consumer market channel (read: Best Buy) and not rely on just the Internet and specialty shops for sales. Many people are looking to ditch subscription TV and besides the upcoming D-Link Boxee Box, there aren’t many other devices as polished as the Popbox available.

Intel Forced to Remove "Cripple AMD" Function from Compiler?
Here's something you probably don't know, but really should - especially if you're a programmer, and especially especially if you're using Intel's compiler. It's a fact that's not widely known, but Intel's compiler deliberately and knowingly cripples performance for non-Intel (AMD/VIA) processors.
Agner Fog details this particularly nasty examples of Intel's anticompetitive practices quite well. Intel's compiler can produce different versions of pieces of code, with each version being optimised for a specific processor and/or instruction set (SSE2, SSE3, etc.). The system detects which CPU it's running on and chooses the optimal code path accordingly; the CPU dispatcher, as it's called.
"However, the Intel CPU dispatcher does not only check which instruction set is supported by the CPU, it also checks the vendor ID string," Fog details, "If the vendor string says 'GenuineIntel' then it uses the optimal code path. If the CPU is not from Intel then, in most cases, it will run the slowest possible version of the code, even if the CPU is fully compatible with a better version."
Great Playstation emulator FpseCE 0.10, finally, released! + video
We emulator freaks have been waiting for version FpseCE 0.10 for at least two and a half years. Back in May-June 2007 when I published my (almost) all-in-one article series on emulating other computing platforms (see THIS) on Windows Mobile, everyone was already waiting for FpseCE 0.10. This is why, back in 2007, I chose not to publish a PS Emulation Bible back in 2007, by the way – I didn’t want to end up having to (completely) rewrite it after the imminent release of the brand new version.
The waiting turned out to take more than two years; during this, frankly, I’ve given up all my hope to ever see the emulator out. (I, however, actively helped the developers to continue working on the project – I’ve donated them about $20.)
Nevertheless, last Christmas (a few days ago), it was, finally, released to the public and I need to say it’s indeed as good as expected.
It's available for download HERE. It doesn't necessarily need a ROM BIOS file, unlike psx4iphone on the iPhone.

LG's DP570MH Portable Television Handles Mobile DTV And DVD
Mobile DTV quietly became a reality in the United States earlier this year, and now LG Electronics is hoping to be one of the first company's to market with equipment to take advantage of the broadcasting protocol. As the new year kicks off, LG is introducing the planet's first "portable, battery-operated mobile DTV in the United States," which is designed to receive new rugged over-the-air signals being transmitted by local broadcasters. In case you're unaware, this new Mobile DTV protocol works a lot like mobile broadcasting signals in other nations, where--like in South Korea and Japan--they've been widely available and in use for years. Local TV stations already broadcast their signals as to be received by OTA antennas connected to televisions, and now they'll be broadcasting those same signals in a new format that can be grabbed by portable devices within vehicles on the move.
ComingNext Widget Shows More Calendar On Your Homescreen
After tweeting about this issue, I was pointed by @NormanJ and @Camb078 to a 3rd party widget called ComingNext. ComingNext is up to v1.24, which is awesome and shows some really active development. The widget ties into your device’s calendar to show up to 4 upcoming entries right there on your homescreen. The .zip file includes 2 copies of the widget, too, so that you can have up to 8 upcoming entries, which is freakin sweet.
The best part of ComingNext, though, is the vast amount of user-changeable settings available. You can click the image to the right to see the full list of settings. As you can see, not only can you control the various colors and labels and whatnot, but you can also change which calendar application the widget launches! This means if you use a more powerful calendar application, like SBSH Calendar or Handy Calendar, you can program ComingNext to launch that, rather than the default built-in calendar application.
ComingNext is a free download, and you can get it here. What other great 3rd party widgets have you found that don’t get much coverage? Share the link in the comments so we can all enjoy them!

Get 33.4GB Per Layer On Your Blu-ray Discs Coming?
While 25GB on a disc a few years back seemed like a lot of data, we might be able to get 33.4GB per DVD layer in the near future. Panasonic and Sony have revealed that a technology, i-MLSE (Maximum Likelihood Sequence Estimation) that can provide a third more space on a Blu-ray disc than existing technology. The benefit of this development is that this is dependent on software, so you won’t need any additional lasers or settings to record the extra capacity. Sony seems rather hopeful that i-MLSE will become popular and will most likely be proposing it to the Blu-ray Disc Association. Will we all be sporting higher capacity Blu-ray discs in the future? It certainly seems possible, doesn’t it?

Motorola Shadow – new 4.3 inch Android phone
The Motorola Shadow cell phone will have a 4.3-inch WVGA 850X484 resolution screen, 1080p video playback, HDMI port. I’m actually really happy to see HDMI start making an appearance on more devices. With those specs, and hopefully LTE support, I highly doubt this will have LTE and becoming out within the next year or two.
The Motorola Shadow Android phone features include an 8 megapixel camera, a 4.3 inch with 800×484 display, 1080p video playback, a mere 9.0mm in thickness. The Motorola Shadow will be available in select markets starting the first quarter of 2010.
