Ubuntu turned into Windows XP

Chinese hackers have managed to perform a travesty - that is, turning the Ubuntu platform to resemble Windows XP in terms of its visual interface. Pretty neat, considering Microsoft is busy tracking down and closing in on all pirated versions of Windows XP, so why not turn Ubuntu to look like XP instead? Unfortunately, the final handiwork still uses nothing but Chinese characters, so those who don't understand will miss out on a rather ironic moment.

New Touchscreen Technology Coming Soon?

If you’ve been paying attention to touchscreen technology, you’ll know that there are resistive screens and capacitive screens, but have you heard of Interpolating Force-Sensitive Resistance (I.F.S.R) technology? It certainly sounds like something out of a Star Wars flick (though unfortunately it’s not). Scientists at the New York University Media Research Lab have formed Touchco and are working on I.F.S.R technology, which would allow them to create touchscreens that can be produced very cheaply, and being able to sell them at $10 per square foot. These thin and flexible touchscreens would also be multi-touch enabled, enabling them to receive simultaneous touch inputs. Could this be the display technology of eBook readers in the future?

Microsoft to integrate Windows Mobile, Xbox Live

Microsoft has committed itself to developing Windows Mobile as a more substantial gaming platform, according to a pair of freshly discovered job listings. A post for a Principal Program Manager is the most significant and would task the recruit with bringing "Xbox Live enabled games" to Windows Mobile phones. The move wouldn't result in Xbox-quality games but instead linking them to the social aspects of the service, including avatars, social elements and "multi-screen experiences."
Simultaneously, a Software Test Engineer position is less specific about Xbox Live integration but does seek help creating the mobile gaming experience at Microsoft and puts a focus on a phone's "always connected Internet" as a cornerstone of the platform.
The moves would not just address a common complaint of Microsoft's various platforms being isolated from each other but a significant deficit in gaming for Windows Mobile. Despite having full 3D support and even getting help from companies like NVIDIA in receiving gaming-friendly hardware, the mobile OS has trailed platforms like iPhone and Android not just in the number of games available but also relative quality, as most commercial-level games aren't developed for Windows Mobile. Microsoft's strongest commitment to mobile gaming has been the launch of Zune HD games that themselves are only carefully hand-picked titles.

Nokia to ITC: all Apple products infringe our patents

Nokia on Tuesday escalated its legal war against Apple with a complaint to the US International Trade Commission. The argument claims not only that the iPhone infringes patents but that "virtually all" products Apple makes, including iPods and Macs, are guilty of violating 7 Nokia patents. Nokia's allegations touch on both hardware-related patents for antennas, cameras and power management as well as user interfaces.
"Nokia has been the leading developer of many key technologies in small electronic devices," Patent Licensing General Manager Paul Melin claims. "This action is about protecting the results of such pioneering development. While our litigation in Delaware is about Apple's attempt to free-ride on the back of Nokia investment in wireless standards, the ITC case filed today is about Apple's practice of building its business on Nokia's proprietary innovation."
The company didn't outline its goals with the patent dispute, though most such ITC complaints are meant to seek import bans that would prevent a company from selling products affected by the dispute.
Nokia's move follows just after an Apple countersuit which claims the Finnish phone maker copied the iPhone when it couldn't compete properly on its own. Critics have charged Nokia with "competition by lawsuit," or attempting to compete by either damaging a rival's profit margins or blocking its sales rather than creating a better product.
Apple has been contacted for comment but hasn't had an opportunity to respond as of press time.

GSM call encryption code cracked, published for the whole world to see
At

Did you know that the vast majority of calls carried out on the 3.5 billion GSM connections in the world today are protected by a 21-year old 64-bit encryption algorithm? You should now, given that the A5/1 privacy algorithm, devised in 1988, has been deciphered by German computer engineer Karsten Nohl and published as a torrent for fellow code cracking enthusiasts and less benevolent forces to exploit. Worryingly, Karsten and his crew of merry men obtained the binary codes by simple brute force -- they fed enough random strings of numbers in to effectively guess the password. The GSM Association -- which has had a 128-bit A5/3 key available since 2007, but found little takeup from operators -- has responded by having a whinge about Mr. Nohl's intentions and stating that operators could just modify the existing code to re-secure their networks. Right, only a modified 64-bit code is just as vulnerable to cracking as the one that just got cracked. It's important to note that simply having the code is not in itself enough to eavesdrop on a call, as the cracker would be faced with just a vast stream of digital communications -- but Karsten comes back to reassure us that intercepting software is already available in customizable open source varieties. So don't be like Tiger, keep your truly private conversations off the airwaves, at least for a while.

The Bolt projector phone by Logic Wireless was introduced last year, where the company has released an updated model which is powered by the Symbian operating system, throwing a VGA image up to 64" wide. Apart from that, you will also be able to enjoy two cameras which more or less means only one thing, which is 3G connectivity. Unfortunately, that is missing which is a puzzle to us. A dual SIM carriage and touchscreen display rounds off the list of features. Word has it the updated Logic Bolt will retail for $500 thereabouts unlocked

Samsung camera leaks with Wi-Fi, OLED touch

Samsung has inadvertently tipped its hand as to a camera it may introduce at CES. The CL80 is poised to be Samsung's first real connected camera and will have Wi-Fi to upload to Facebook, Flickr, Photobox and Picasa without having to sync with a computer. Its interface will be similarly advanced as Samsung promises a 3.7-inch AMOLED touchscreen with haptic (vibration) feedback as the primary control scheme.
As an actual camera, it also stands to be one of Samsung's most advanced point-and-shoots with a 14-megapixel sensor and a 7X (31-217mm film equivalent) wide angle lens with hardware image stabilization. Its light sensitivity will reach up to ISO 4,800 (6,400 at 3 megapixels), and it will shoot H.264 video at up to 720p resolution and with HDMI output for full-resolution previews.
Samsung expectedly doesn't provide any signs of how much the camera will cost or when it will ship, but the appearance of an official US page indicates the company could use CES as the venue and may release the camera soon.

HDMI 1.4 standard offers broadcast 3D video support

HDMI Licensing aims to support 3D content using their upcoming HDMI spec v1.4, and it remains to be seen whether that push will happen or not, so we'll have to wait until the consortium meets next month to add the "Top/Bottom" 3D format. While the group bemoans the lack of a mandatory 3D broadcast format, HDMI 1.4 aims to establish protocols for several 3D display technologies which will include the frame, line, or field alternative methods such as side by side display, and 2D plus depth methods. This new specification will also boast a dedicated pipe for 100Mbps Ethernet connections, featuring an Audio Return Channel that will send compressed audio via intermediary devices. Expect to see HDMI 1.4-equipped devices introduced at CES 2010 next month.

Hacked Firmware For Motorola Droid Offers WiFi Tethering

While PdaNet is a great way to tether your phone, if you want to tether your Motorola Droid over Wi-Fi, you’ll need to get your hands a little dirty. Folks over at the DroidForums.net have come up with a hacked version of the 2.0.1 firmware which will allow you to do just that. Of course, you’ll have to keep in mind that fiddling with your mobile phone’s firmware means that you have a rather high possibility of bricking your phone. The warning from the forum that states “if your phone stays at the white Motorola logo for longer than a minute or two, you probably bricked it” should serve as a warning of the potential dangers of trying this. You’ve been warned.

Next iPhone to get 5-megapixel camera?
At
Wednesday, December 23, 2009

The next iPhone will get an upgrade to a 5-megapixel camera, sources said on Wednesday. OmniVision, Apple's current supplier for the 3.2-megapixel camera in the iPhone 3GS, has reportedly been given orders for its second sensor upgrade in a year with expectation that an iPhone using the higher resolution will ship in the second half of 2010. Production of the 5-megapixel sensors could start as soon as winter 2010.
Technical details of the sensor weren't provided in the DigiTimes tip, but a potential candidate is the OV5650. The sensor echoes Apple's emphasis on image quality over resolution as it should both handle better in low light and generate less noise. It will also be responsive enough to handle video recording at 1080p, but there's no signs as of yet that Apple will upgrade its video capture features.
In spite of any potential upgrades, the same purported leak also suggests Apple will be ambitious and could order between 40 million and 45 million camera sensors just for iPhones, and consequently a similar number of iPhones, through the course of the year. The tally would be more than twice the 20-21 million estimated to have shipped for 2009 and wouldn't include any cameras for iPod nanos or a possible early iPod touch upgrade, which could add another 20 million to 25 million orders to OmniVision's list.
A 5-megapixel camera would be conservative in the industry as many photo-oriented phones already have 8-megapixel or even 12-megapixel cameras, such as Nokia's N86 8MP or the Sony Ericsson Satio. However, most of these have physically larger sensors and are often bulkier or have to devote more of their space to the camera than Apple has normally been willing to provide.

7-inch Apple tablet "definitely" coming in January?

Apple's heavily rumored tablet could come in a smaller size if a rumor today proves true. Referring to a source who has been "amazingly accurate" with previous Apple rumors, BGR supports notions of a January Apple event but says that the launch is "100%" likely to include a 7-inch tablet. Whether this would be in place of or in addition to the more commonly rumored 10-inch tablet isn't known by the tipster.
Some of the earliest rumors, dating back as far as 2007, had pointed to a 7-inch device but had grown silent as talk increased of a larger version. A smaller size would more clearly separate the line from MacBooks and lower the price, though it may hurt perceptions of the hardware as an alternative to a netbook. Most rumors touching on the software side have implied it would use a variant of the iPhone OS instead of Mac OS X.

December 22nd, 2009 – SPB Software, a leading maker of mobile applications, announces the release of SPB Flash Cards, a learning software created to quickly and effectively expand one's word stock in a language under study. The software provides over 1000 cards in Czech, German, English, Spanish, French, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Dutch, Portuguese, Chinese and Swedish, all dubbed by native speakers of respective languages.
SPB Flash Cards provides great assistance in learning a new language, although it has no claim to be the sole mean of doing that. When mastering a new language, it is crucial to skip the stage of translating a word into mother tongue first, memorizing a direct match of a subject and a foreign word instead. SPB Flash Cards software is aimed at just that - the process of learning begins with a new flash card appearing, showing an image of an item along with the matching word and the right pronunciation from a native speaker. But this is just the beginning - several other memorizing techniques are also included. Besides, SPB Flash Cards contains a smart algorythm to track the user's progress and adapt further learning process accordingly.

You simply link your Flickr account to Image Space. You can then start browsing and sharing photos in Image Space and this way building a view to your part of the world. Your account, the privacy settings and contact lists are handled in Flickr. You see your Flickr contacts and those photos you have access to. Moreover, the comments, tags and photo descriptions can be viewed and edited in Image Space.
When there are enough photos of a given area which have been made publicly available, Image Space generates a 3D presentation from them. This feature will be ramped up in phases during the next two months, so please be patient. You can see some examples now at Helsinki and Tampere.
Notice: Nokia Image Space is an experimental research project by Nokia Research Center. Uploading photos by using Nokia Share Online client in the phone generates data traffic between the mobile phone and the service. The traffic costs depend on your network operator and data plan.
Compatibility and system requirements
Nokia Image Space browser
- Adobe Flash 10 plugin for browser
- Firefox, IE or Safari browsers (Some differences in behavior between PC and Mac)
Nokia Image Space Capture for S60

While most notebooks and netbooks these days come equipped with Bluetooth connectivity, the more basic models out there lack this feature which can be easily remedied by an add on such as the USB Nano Bluetooth Adapter. Retailing for all of $13, this unique device is mighty small, complying with Bluetooth 2.1 and USB 2.0 specifications. Since it is so diminutive in nature, you can just plug it in and leave it there without worrying about the peripheral snapping off while traveling.

iPhone 4G rumored for June 28-July 2

A calendar listing for San Francisco's Moscone Center has led to speculation that Apple's annual Worldwide Developer's Conference will coincide with the three-year anniversary of the original iPhone's launch.
The Moscone Center Calendar lists a "Corporate Event" from June 28, 2010 through July 2, 2010 in the Moscone West hall. Previous Apple events have been reserved with the same title.
This year, WWDC 2009 ran June 8 through June 12. In previous years, the event has marked the introduction of new iPhone models. This June, Apple introduced the iPhone 3GS.
The original iPhone debuted on June 29, 2007, along with an exclusive contract with carrier AT&T. Since then, it has been rumored that the two parties are locked into a three-year deal due to expire next summer. While AT&T has reportedly attempted to extend that contract, rumors have persisted that Apple will expand to other carriers.
If WWDC 2010 does take place on June 28, 2010, it could be booked to coincide with the expiration of the current contract with AT&T. Recent reports have suggested that Verizon, the largest wireless carrier in the U.S., could offer a CDMA compatible iPhone next year. Some analysts see Verizon as the best choice for Apple to expand the platform, but others feel technical limitations and different corporate styles could serve as a roadblock for such a deal.

ICD Ultra Tablet Looks Sleek

The ICD Ultra tablet is probably one of the smallest tablets that we’ve seen recently, as it sports a 7-inch screen, though the highlight will certainly be the NVIDIA Tegra T20 chip. While the current design uses a resistive display, ICD is planning on updating it with a capacitive display before it goes on sale next year, which is certainly great news. The ICD Ultra should sport a integrated 3G SIM to keep it perpetually connected, which also means that there is a possibility that carriers could subsidize it. With a rumored price tag of $249, it’ll certainly be an interesting device to consider. Specifications of it include:
- 186 x 158 x 18mm measurements
- 7-inch display with a possibility of 800 x 480 or 1024 x 600 pixels
- 4GB flash storage
- microSD card expansion
- 512MB RAM
- Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and HDMI-out
- Accelerometer, ambient light sensor
- 3.5mm headphone jack
- 1.3-megapixel camera

The annual International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) that is scheduled to be held in a couple of weeks from now will see an interesting exhibit from Portland based NewKinetix called the Rē.
Rē is an IR based universal remote control plug-in accessory for the iPhone that can substitute every other remote control at home.
So how does this work? The Rē remote control comes with an IR accessory and an iPhone app. The iPhone app comprehensively 'learns' the functionalities of any number of remote controlling devices and with the help of a built-in IR database, can quickly let you operate any device inside your home or elsewhere without the need for any battery, wire or WiFi. According to the company website:
"The Rē™ creates a specialized remote control for each entertainment activity you want to control. Activity Remotes are automatically set up to allow you instant access to the right device buttons for watching TV, a DVD movie, or listening to a CD. If you need a special button from a Device Remote, it’s a touch away, or if you use that function often, you can make a copy of the button in your Activity"
More details about how good the device is and its price will be known only during the CES event. From first looks, the device definitely looks impressive.
Do you find this iPhone accessory particularly useful to your lifestyle? Is this something that you would buy? How much will you be willing to spend on Rē? Please tell us in the comments.

Linux Multitouch Advancement, the X.org Way

As a result of the MPX integration in the mainline X.Org Server, the French-based ENAC Interactive Computing Lab produced a new video showing off the new multi-touch capabilities using Fedora 12 with its X Server 1.7 and Linux 2.6.31 kernel.
Back in June they had released a video that showed off some multi-touch capabilities of Linux. At that time and in the video they were using the Linux kernel and then recognizing gestures from input events and then sending specialized commands over D-Bus straight into Compiz. Since that time though, X Server 1.7/X.Org 7.5 has been released, which fully delivers on Multi-Pointer X support.
A variety of touch-based devices are shown, among which are the Broadcom 5974, Stantum, NTrig, 3M, and DiamondTouch surface. While their system configuration was largely stock from Fedora, they had used a modified xf86-input-evdev driver and a multi-touch management client (multitouchd), which is available from the computing lab's web-site.
Using X.org with this driver can be a "cleaner" solution for multi-touch adoption in mainline Linux distributions, allowing users to utilize this input feature only when it is supported by their hardware

The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) announced the adoption of Bluetooth® low energy wireless technology, which is the hallmark feature of the Bluetooth Core Specification Version 4.0. This enhancement to the Bluetooth Core Specification allows two types of implementation, dual-mode and single-mode. In a dual-mode implementation, Bluetooth low energy functionality is integrated into an existing Classic Bluetooth controller. The resulting architecture shares much of Classic Bluetooth technology’s existing radio and functionality resulting in a minimal cost increase compared to Classic Bluetooth technology.

“With today’s announcement the race is on for product designers to be the first to market,” said Michael Foley, Ph.D., executive director, Bluetooth SIG. “Bluetooth low energy modules for all sorts of new products may now be qualified – this is an important step towards our goal of enabling new markets with Bluetooth wireless technology. For example, the Continua Health Alliance has already selected Bluetooth low energy technology as a transport for the next version of its guidelines.”
