LG, AT&T Announce 1-GHz Projector Phone

Here's a whole bunch of firsts for the U.S.: LG today announced the Expo, a Windows Mobile 6.5-based smartphone with a built-in fingerprint sensor and optional pico-projector powered by a Qualcomm 1-GHz processor that I assume is their Snapdragon chipset, though LG doesn't say.
Without the projector, the Expo is a reasonably sized slider smartphone at 4.5 inches by 2.24 inches by 0.65 inches. It has a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, a 5-megapixel camera, a 3.2-inch, 800-by-480 screen, Wi-Fi, HSDPA 7.2, and a giant honking 1500 mAh battery.

According to LG's Web site, the projector is an optional, add-on accessory that will be sold separately. AT&T and LG did not give a price for the projector.
The phone also has GPS, Bluetooth, an accelerometer, a proximity sensor, and an FM radio on board.
The phone's manual explains that it runs LG's S-Class user interface, a creative hack of Windows Mobile 6.5 which heavily uses rotating wheels of icons. This will be the first LG S-Class phone in the US, along with the first Snapdragon phone sold be a US carrier and the first projector phone in the US.
According to an official AT&T/LG data sheet, the phone will go on sale first through business channels, not consumer sales. Phonescoop.com pegs the release date as Dec. 7.
We've seen all the elements of the Expo before, but never together in a phone for the U.S. market. LG announced its S-Class user interface last February and has released several phones in Europe with the new interface. Samsung has a projector phone on sale in Korea, which we spent some time with back in January. And the HTC HD2 Windows Mobile phone has a 1-Ghz Qualcomm processor, but it hasn't been able to get any US carrier support yet.

Samsung Bada OS Coming in December

Samsung has announced that it will be launching its very own "Bada" mobile Operating System on December 8. Invitations for a press event in London have been issued.

As of now, the company has not disclosed what kind of an OS the Bada will be. However, we are still not sure if it will be made available for other manufactures and whether it is a full smartphone OS. Looking at the way Samsung is promoting the event, the company seems to have pinned lot of hope on the Bada. Samsung Bada based phones can be expected early 2010 and the company expects it to become a significant role in its upcoming devices.

If the OS turns out to be yet another smartphone platform, it would be interesting to see how it will stand up to the likes of Android, iPhone Symbian and other contemporaries which have already set their foot and have consolidated their respective positions in this highly competitive segment. Come December 8 and we will find out!

Acer Android phone 2010 coming soon

The new Acer Android phone is coming soon, Acer plans to introduce yet another 10 new android phones in 2010. “Next year it will be much more balanced,” Acer’s Aymar de Lencquesaing said in an interview with Reuters. “There is definitely momentum behind Android. The pace is faster than most would have anticipated one year ago.”

Intel i9 Processor Details Leaked

It seems that some performance results of Inte’s new six-core Xeon were prematurely revealed by Polish site PCLab, before being taken down at the request of Intel. Despite the take down, the information is still being passed around the Internet, and based on that, it seems that Intel’s new 6-core Xeon chips code-named “Gulftown” are nearly 50% faster and use up to 50% less power. That certainly sounds like a sweet deal, doesn’t it? According to sources online, the chip will be featured in future Mac Pro models which could arrive as soon as Q1 of 2010. These “Gulftown” chips will be branded with the i9 name, and will be Intel’s first six-core, dual-socket processor.

Apple Field Testing Next Generation iPhone?

Could Apple be field testing the next generation iPhone already? iPhone developer Pandav has noticed usage records of an unreleased iPhone in the iBART app’s analytics. The iPhone listed in the usage logs is the iPhone 3,1, which doesn’t match any current iPhone on the market. The latest is the iPhone 3GS, which is listed as iPhone 2,1. It shouldn’t be too much of a surprise to see that Apple is busy working on a new iPhone, what with the rumors that Verizon will be getting an iPhone somewhere in mid 2010. What will the next generation iPhone be like? That’s what we’d all love to find out.

Microsoft readies streaming Silverlight video for iPhone

Microsoft has demonstrated Silverlight video streaming for the iPhone, according to reports. The technology relies on server-side transcoding and HTML 5's video tag, but displays Silverlight content in a native MPEG-2 v8 format recognized by the iPhone's version of QuickTime. "So it's the same IIS smooth streaming content, the same server, the same point of origin, but now I can get that content to play without any code changes, without any real work, on the iPhone. That's the critical thing for our customers," says Microsoft User Experience platform manager Brian Goldfarb.
The technology is further said to have the blessing of Apple, which may be unusual given the company's position on the more ubiquitous Flash standard. No version of Flash is allowed on the iPhone as a result of performance concerns, particularly in regards to battery life. The standard is nevertheless available on competing devices, such as the Android-based HTC Hero. Efforts to produce a version of Flash that Apple might accept have so far proven fruitless.

FreeBSD 8.0 Released

Astute readers probably already saw this one waiting in our backend, but since there was no official announcement yet, I decided to wait. Now that it's officially here, let's rejoice: the FreeBSD team has released version 8.0 of their operating system, packed with new features and improvements.
With FreeBSD being an operating system directed mostly towards servers and more technical use cases, there are no fancy screenshots or wizz-bang announcements. What we have a is a clear list of improvements which regular FreeBSD users will certainly enjoy. Even if you're a new user, this release seems like as good a time as any to check FreeBSD out.
Some of the highlights from this release:

• A new virtualization container named “vimage” has been implemented. This is a jail with a virtualized instance of the FreeBSD network stack and can be created by using jail(8) command.
• The FreeBSD netisr framework has been reimplemented for parallel threading support. This is a kernel network dispatch interface which allows device drivers (and other packet sources) to direct packets to protocols for directly dispatched or deferred processing. The new implementation supports up to one netisr thread per CPU, and several benchmarks on SMP machines show substantial performance improvement over the old one.
• [amd64, i386] The FreeBSD Linux emulation layer has been updated to version 2.6.16 and the default Linux infrastructure port is now emulators/linux_base-f10 (Fedora 10).
• The FreeBSD USB subsystem has been reimplemented to support modern devices and better SMP scalability. The new implementation includes Giant-lock-free device drivers, Linux compatibility layer, usbconfig(8) utility, full support for split transaction and isochronous transaction, and so on.
• The ZFS file system has been updated to version 13. The changes include ZFS operations by a regular user, L2ARC, ZFS Intent Log on separated disks (slog), sparse volumes, and so on.

In more layman's terms, this means FreeBSD 8 has network stack virtualisation, binary compatibility with Fedora 10 Linux software, a new USB stack, and version 13 of the ZFS file system, which brings with it numerous improvements.
Other improvements include support for BSD MAC, as well as improved device mmap() extensions which pave the way for a 64bit version of the NVIDIA driver for the x86-64 platform. FreeBSD 8 supports GNOME 2.26.3 and KDE 4.3.1.
