Πώς δημιουργούνται οι μνήμες - Για πρώτη φορά υπάρχουν εικόνες από τη νευρωνική διαδικασία σχηματισμού τους

Για πρώτη φορά οι επιστήμονες μπόρεσαν να αποτυπώσουν σε εικόνες μια μέχρι τώρα μυστηριώδη διαδικασία: τον μηχανισμό δημιουργίας της μακροχρόνιας μνήμης στον εγκέφαλο.

Η έρευνα έγινε από ερευνητές του αμερικανικού πανεπιστημίου της Καλιφόρνιας - Λος Άντζελες (UCLA) και του Νευρολογικού Ινστιτούτου του καναδικού πανεπιστημίου ΜακΓκιλ, υπό τον βιοχημικό Κέλσι Μάρτιν και το νευροεπιστήμονα Γουέιν Σόσιν, και δημοσιεύτηκε στο περιοδικό "Science", σύμφωνα με την ηλεκτρονική υπηρεσία Live Science.

Η ανακάλυψη παρέχει τις πρώτες οπτικές ενδείξεις ότι όταν μια νέα μνήμη σχηματίζεται, νέες πρωτεϊνες δημιουργούνται στις συνάψεις των νευρώνων (το σύνδεσμο ανάμεσα στα εγκεφαλικά κύτταρα), ενισχύοντας με τον τρόπο αυτό τη δύναμη του νευρωνικού συνδέσμου και την ίδια την ανάμνηση. Οι νευροεπιστήμονες υποπτεύονταν ότι αυτό συμβαίνει, αλλά ποτέ έως τώρα δεν το είχαν δει.

Η μελέτη επιτρέπει την καλύτερη κατανόηση του πώς δημιουργούνται τα ίχνη της μνήμης στο νου. Η δυνατότητα πλέον της παρακολούθησης σε πραγματικό χρόνο αυτής της διαδικασίας ελπίζεται ότι θα "ξεκλειδώσει" τα μυστικά της μνήμης.

Οι συνάψεις των νευρώνων αποτελούν ένα συνεχώς μεταβαλλόμενο δίκτυο συνδέσεων, που επιτρέπουν τόσο την αποθήκευση πληροφοριών (μνημών) όσο και τις σταδιακές αλλαγές και προσαρμογές με βάση την μάθηση. Η "πλαστικότητα" αυτή του εγκεφάλου τού επιτρέπει να είναι σταθερός και εύπλαστος ταυτόχρονα.

Οι επιστήμονες έχουν ανακαλύψει ότι ένας σημαντικός μηχανισμός για τη δημιουργία μακρόχρονης μνήμης είναι η "μετάφραση" ή η παραγωγή (σύνθεση) νέων πρωτεϊνών τοπικά στις συνάψεις, κάτι που τώρα για πρώτη φορά αποτυπώθηκε σε εικόνα.

Οι επιστήμονες πειραματίστηκαν με τον εγκέφαλο του θαλάσσιου οργανισμού "Απλυσία καλιφόρνικα" και εξέθεσαν τους νευρώνες του στην χημική ουσία σεροτονίνη, η οποία έχει αποδειχτεί ότι ενεργοποιεί τον σχηματισμό μνήμης (αυτή η ανακάλυψη χάρισε στον Έρικ Καντέλ και τους συνεργάτες του το Νόμπελ του 2000).

Οι επιστήμονες, αυτή την φορά, κατάφεραν να ανακαλύψουν έναν τρόπο για να διαπιστώσουν με τα μάτια τους ότι όντως δημιουργούνται νέες πρωτεϊνες κατά τη διαδικασία σχηματισμού μιας μνήμης. Χρησιμοποίησαν μια φθορίζουσα πρωτεϊνη, που μπορεί να αλλάξει χρώμα, από πράσινη σε κόκκινη, όταν εκτίθεται στο υπεριώδες φως. Μετά, φώτισαν τα εγκεφαλικά κύτταρα (νευρώνες) με αυτό το φως, έτσι ώστε όσες πρωτεϊνες ήδη υπήρχαν, έγιναν κόκκινες. Όταν όμως οι ερευνητές ώθησαν τα κύτταρα να σχηματίσουν νέες μνήμες, τότε παρατήρησαν ότι νέες πράσινου χρώματος πρωτεϊνες εμφανίστηκαν στο μικροσκόπιο.

Αν και δεν είναι ακόμα σαφές, οι επιστήμονες πιστεύουν ότι οι νέες πρωτεϊνες βοηθούν στην ενίσχυση των συνάψεων μεταξύ των νευρώνων. Με δεδομένο ότι οι περισσότεροι νευροεπιστήμονες θεωρούν πως οι μνήμες σχηματίζονται όταν αλλάζει η ισχύς των νευρωνικών συνάψεων, προκύπτει ότι για πρώτη φορά οι επιστήμονες "είδαν" τη δημιουργία μιας μνήμης μέσω της δημιουργίας των αναγκαίων πρωτεϊνών. Όπως διαπιστώθηκε, και οι δύο άκρες της σύναψης εμπλέκονται στο σχηματισμό της νέας μνήμης και όχι μόνο μια, όπως μέχρι τώρα πίστευαν ορισμένοι νευροεπιστήμονες.
